Leadership isn't a mask - it's a Homecoming

The Servant Leader: Coming Home to Yourself

For years now, I've been turning over the same question: what actually makes a Servant Leader? Not the polished version, but a real one.

I want to share the ingredients I've found - the ones that, alchemized well, bring you back home to yourself instead of sending you out to perform someone you're not.

Here's the first thing to remember: there is no perfect leader, only flawed humans, doing their best. The greatest leaders have the courage to show up anyway, knowing they will fail in some way, and choosing to serve regardless. That's courage embodied. Not the absence of fear, but the willingness to face it. Not bypass it - face it. By work through it, healing it, and turning it into medicine, into wisdom, into grounded guidance. If you are doing that, you are doing The Work. And that will inspire people, whether you mean it to or not.

Applied Integrity asks something specific of you: witness where you're out of alignment. Notice where you could use some healing. And be honest about it with yourself. Nobody is asking for perfection - it doesn't exist. But honesty in your journey, your choices, your responses is where the growth lives. Hide the flaws, and you cut yourself off from the deeper parts of you. You deny the world the exact support only you can give.

The Servant Leader goes deeper still. The question isn't "what do I need" - it's "what serves the collective." Not through suffering, or through martyrdom, but through a healed ego that finds its fulfillment in gracious action. We don't kill the ego. We let it evolve into a part of us that serves something larger - within, and through everything we do. The move is beyond the Martyr and into a life that is strong, upright, dignified. Dignity is what lets you serve with grace.

Leaders let themselves be seen and heard. If visibility has been your fear, this is your invitation to step out of the shadow, even if it's only for yourself first. You don't need a stage, you just need the willingness to let others witness what you carry. Old fear will surface. Face it anyway, and you begin reconditioning yourself to take pride in the sharing itself, even when it's hard. 

And with the visibility point - good leaders speak up, especially when it scares them. Imperfectly, nervous, even afraid. They have something to say and a willingness to risk the consequences of sharing it.

Take a moment. Think of the people in your life, or in the public eye whose leadership feels healthy to you. How do they show up? Not just in front of others, but behind closed doors, too.

And here's the truth underneath that: if you can recognize those qualities, you already carry them. You cannot see what you don't already know, on some level. So take these people off the pedestal. Let them touch ground. Find what you share with them and what you're ready to amplify in yourself.

A few questions to sit with this week:

• Which qualities in healthy leaders inspire me? What is it about them that speaks to my heart, my soul?
• When have I shown up as a leader for others, or for myself in a way that felt aligned? Can I keep choosing that, daily?
• What do I judge in myself that makes me shrink into shame or fear? What, if healed, would let me stand more visible?
• What does my ego believe about leadership? What's ready to be updated, made healthier?
•  What do I have within me to share with the world? How can I cultivate the courage to speak, share, show?

This week's eclipse offers something rare: a reset point, and a wiping clean of the old, outdated, toxic ideas of power. The old paradigms are crumbling, no matter how hard some are working to prop them up. As you shift your own mindset, you contribute a healthier one to the field. As you heal your relationship with authority and leadership, you show up differently - in ways that ripple outward, in service of a more just and more divine expression of power. It starts with you.
