Over the past few weeks, the same conversation has kept unfolding, carried in by clients and friends and the people I sit with in session, each of them circling a tension that feels both deeply personal And collective: the pull between belonging and freedom. It shows up as a low hum beneath the questions they bring. If I say what I really think, will I lose my place? If I follow what is calling me, will I end up alone? Do I have to choose?
The old stories say yes. Our old archetypal identities have taught us, for a very long time, that these two live at opposite ends of the map. There is the one who stays, who keeps the hearth, who belongs to the village and sacrifices their wildness for it. And there is the one who leaves, the wanderer and the outlier, who buys their freedom with the loss of connection. We have inherited these figures as though they were the only options available to us, and so many of us spend our lives swinging between them, "belonging" until it suffocates, breaking "free" until it becomes lonely, and then swinging back again.
But I want to offer you a different story, because I don't believe you ever need to make that choice.
What most of us have been calling belonging is in fact something else entirely - it is simply fitting in. And fitting in is exhausting. It asks you to read the room before you read yourself, to shape your edges to the container you've entered, to edit your thoughts before they ever reach your mouth. It is a constant, invisible labour of performance, and it traps you, because the self that is accepted is never the self that is real, and so the acceptance never lands where you need it to.
Belonging is the opposite of this. Belonging is what happens when you show up as you are, without the overthinking, conforming, or fearful management of how you will be received, and you are met there. It is something you accept by becoming more whole.
And here is where the old story collapses, because freedom comes from exactly the same place. Freedom is not the absence of ties; it is the presence of authenticity. When you stop using energy for version of yourself that isn't true, that energy returns, and you begin to live in the flow of who you actually are. Your choices become cleaner. Your creativity becomes louder. Your life begins to move with you rather than against you.
So many people assume that to belong is to be stuck, bound by obligation, held in place by the expectations of others. But the truth is that belonging is an act of freedom. When you are fully connected and fully aware, present in your relationships and your communities without the constraint of falseness, you are not diminished by your bonds, you expand through them. Your life and your creation become the places where you are most yourself.
Recognise that they rise from the same root. When you stand in truth, you belong. When you belong to truth, you are free.
I think of this as leading from within. Life will always present us with polarities, and the choice is not to swing from one pole to the other, chasing relief, but to align, to find the centre point where both can live inside you at once. That is where your Dharma lives. Not in the endless back-and-forth, but in the steady, sovereign place where you stop fighting what you came here to be.
So I'll leave you with the question I've been asking the people I sit with: what would help you step towards Alignment, rather than fighting your Dharma?
If this question is stirring something in you, if you sense you are standing at the threshold between the self you've been performing and the self that is waiting to be lived, I would love to sit with you in it. You're welcome to book a free call, and we can explore together what it might look like to return to yourself, and to belong there.
Sending blessings for alignment, honesty, and a true sense of belonging.
